Het is nu echt tijd voor een nieuwsbrief vinden wij! Er is namelijk allerlei nieuws te melden over Messages from Paradise, het interactieve video- en webproject van Stichting ZiM. Hierin melden wij:

- De stand van zaken rondom de fondsenwerving voor het project en de partners die zich op dit moment hebben verbonden aan het project

- De plannen voor de komende maanden.

Het geld!
ZiM heeft inmiddels toezeggingen binnen van VSB Fonds Rotterdam, de Dienst Kunst en Cultuur Rotterdam, Kosmopolis Rotterdam en Pact op Zuid Rotterdam. Deze fondsen willen bijdragen aan de realisatie van Messages from Paradise.

Van SNS Reaal hebben we te horen gekregen dat ze het project heel interessant vinden. We gaan ervan uit dat we in december kunnen beginnen met de voorbereidingen!

De partners!
Pact op Zuid Rotterdam denkt met ons mee over een juiste locatie en gelegenheid voor de installatie in Rotterdam Zuid. Gedacht wordt aan Winkelcentrum Zuidplein en/of Het Gemaal.  Het Albeda College Rotterdam wil heel graag het project hebben als deel van hun leerplan, hoewel ze momenteel nog geen financiële toezeggingen kunnen doen. Wij denken na over een versie-op-maat voor een of meer Albeda-locaties.

De activiteiten!
Deze zomer heeft Daniela Swarowsky samen met Samuli Schielke gewerkt aan de Oostenrijk-Egypte versie van Messages from Paradise: zij heeft Egyptische immigranten in Wenen geinterviewd, waarvan filmopnamen zijn gemaakt. Daniela Swarowsky was in oktober uitgenodigd om over Messages from Paradise te vertellen op een conferentie in Berlijn onder de titel: ‘Migration in Museums – Narratives of Diversity in Europe’, georganiseerd door Network Migration in Europe e.V., ICOM Europe (International Council of Museums), en Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines, Dudelange (Luxemburg). Hier kwamen professionals en onderzoekers uit de sociaal-maatschappelijke en geesteswetenschappen, kunstenaars, culturele organisatoren en vertegenwoordigers van immigrantengemeenschappen bij elkaar om op Europees niveau bewustwording en discussie te genereren over de rol van migratie-thema’s in de musea. De respons op Daniela’s presentatie was positief en er werd goede feedback gegeven. Veel interessante contacten zijn gelegd met mensen die betrokken zijn bij instituten die zich met zowel kunst als migratie bezighouden, o.a. in Berlijn en in Parijs, en zij toonden interesse om Messages from Paradise in 2009 uit te nodigen.

Als we in december met de Nederland-Marokko versie van Messages from Paradise van start gaan, is de eerste stap de reis naar Marokko voor interviews en film-opnamen. We staan te trappelen en hopen van harte dat alles lukt!

Messages from Paradise #1 is a documentary film about the permanent longing of people for ‘paradise on earth’ that is always located elsewhere.

“Vienna is a garden of paradise,” sang the Egyptian singer Asmahan once. Today more than ever, the West is an idealized projection site for the dreams of a frustrated young generation of Egyptians who, unlike their fathers and grandfathers, can only emigrate with great difficulty and at high personal risk. But the more difficult migration becomes, the stronger become also the dreams of wealth, success, and a full life in respect and freedom.

For all generations, migration is about the possibility to realise a better, happier life. But where can that better life be found? And wherein lies the happiness that so many people pursue in a ‘paradise on earth’ that always seems to be elsewhere?

Vienna is certainly not a garden of paradise. The plan to go to Europe, work hard for a few years and return rich does not work out for most of them. The lives of migrants are characterised by frustrating years of hard work, uncertainty, and homesickness. Many of them are desillusioned about their situation and long back to an idealized image of their home place. Yet most of them state that they also have gained things they now appreciate and don’t want to miss, like health care and good education for their children. But what they gained was often not what they dreamed about.

Messages from Paradise #2 is an attempt to bring these often unfulfilled dreams into contact with each other. The film follows on one side these young Egyptians who dream of a better life they hope to realize in the West and the strategies they develop to get there. On the other side, the film shows Egyptian migrants in Vienna, Austria, some of whom have arrived recently, while others live there since decades. From different perspectives, they tell about their great dreams, the disappointments, and the successes of migration. Their stories come together in a fictitious dialogue of questions, comments, critiques, and contemplations about migration as a dream and as an experience.
