SOHO IN OTTAKRING & CO:
PUBLIC ART INITIATIVES IN COMPARISON

This debate is featuring SOHO IN OTTAKRING, a community art project in an immigrant district of Vienna, initiated and developed by Ula Schneider. Since its founding in 1999 SOHO IN OTTAKRING is in tight connection with the existing structures of the district and collaborating with varied institutions of city planning, economy, arts and culture. Ula Schneider (artist/initiator of SOHO)and Beatrix Zobl (artist/collaborator for the SOHO-Relaunch 2003) present this public art project, which is in it's 6th year, and discuss the role of art and cultural projects in urban renewal processes.
After the presentation, the will be a discussion about similarities and differences in approach, strategies and methods between projects like ZiM and SOHO.

The project 'The Legend of the artist' analyzes images of the artist and the way they are changing through the development of new fields of artistic work. In the process-oriented project Zobl/Schneider use artistic and scientific means and methods. [„dialogue interventions”, conversations, interviews, collections of material, performances, videos, installations and texts.] 'The Legend of the Artist' wants to intervene in definition processes as well as enabling artists to reflect about their own role in society. The TV Documentation 'Cafe Carina' will be shown to demonstrate consequences of this strategy, working “as artists” in the social sphere.
